Let's talk about progression

There's a lot of buzz surrounding the much anticipated third sequel to the legendary Suikoden franchise, unfortunately many of them negative. Fans have argued that it strays dangerously far from the beloved formula of the previous games with the introduction of the Trinity Sight system. The story no longer focuses on the exploits of one hero, but instead tries to portray the tale through the eyes of several others. Honestly, I found the Trinity Sight system to be incredibly creative and refreshing. Finally, the player is given a chance to see the conflict through different perspectives and even play as a minor character. Though some people refuse to welcome these changes, I can't help but accept them.

The first thing you'll notice once you boot up the game for the first time is the stunning anime intro. Simply put, it was one of the best intro movies I've seen in some time and it certainly set the mood for what was about to come next. Sadly, this is the about the only anime FMV you'll see throughout the whole game, which is unfortunate.

The game takes place fifteen years after the events of the second game and it is set in the Grasslands, located west of the Suikoden II's Dunan. The massive plains are inhabited by two major factions; the Zexen Federation and the Six Clans. As fate would have it, the two powers are natural enemies, but their fighting has been temporarily subdued by peace negotiations. Little did they know that other forces are at work and are fanning the flames of war for their own evil motives. Before you begin the game you will select which character you want to play as for the first couple of events. You have Chris Lightfellow, the platinum haired captain of the Zexen Knights and one of the best female leads in an RPG since Valkyrie Profile; Hugo, the son of the Karaya clan chief Lucia, whom you might remember from the second game; and Geddoe, the leader of the Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force. Though all three characters come from distinct backgrounds, their goals will ultimately lead them to the Flame Champion. You must play the game to learn more, but the Flame Champion (actually a mere title) is the leader who, in the past, fought against the Harmonian invasion of the Grasslands and emerged victorious.

True to its traditions, S3 will have you gathering the 108 Stars of Destiny. Loyal fans will be glad to know that some of their favorites have returned as well, like the lovable airhead Viki and the sultry rune mistress Jeane. Thanks to the Trinity Sight system, the player is allowed to play the game with characters other than the three leads. Regardless of the fact that they are much shorter than the main sights, they contribute much to the story. The most notable perspective is that of a boy named Thomas. He's just a simple young man who is given the command of a decrepit castle at the fringe of the Grasslands. What makes him interesting is that he takes the revered role of the Tenkai Star. Oddly enough, this was one of the biggest arguments against the game because this spot has always been reserved for the heroes. I'm glad to say that Thomas deserves to be the Tenkai Star because he is nothing short of a hero. The boy is barely old enough to drive, yet he's directing the activities of a needy castle and fighting off shady politicians! It's safe to say that he's a hero in his own right because once the war's been won and everybody is heading home, he will still be there tending to the needs of his constituents. In addition to Thomas, there are also two secret POVs which you can discover for yourself when you play. Thankfully, the translation is much better in this sequel. Players of the previous game will undoubtedly be extra wary for the same ridiculous goofs and errors that were made in Suikoden II; however, they'd just wasting their time because the translation is one of the best any localization team can offer. It's low on the cheesyness and high on well thought out humor.

Aside from the Trinity Sight system, several other changes have been applied to the gameplay. Character progression is now based on skill sets, which you can improve with Skill Points that you gain after each battle. Leveling up still increases your basic stats, but skills can boost them further in battle. Skills such as Swing can increase the speed of which a character swings their weapon and the higher their grade (the maximum level is determined by their affinity with the skill) the more attacks you get during a battle. Combat is still fought with a party of six, but the new "buddy" rules are now in effect and support characters have been added. The party of six is split into three groups of partners that respond to each other's needs. Support characters don't participate actively in battle, instead, they provide useful skills that take effect during or after the battle. Characters like Jeane can lend their skills in Rune Mastery to boost spell casting speed and power.

The typical 3D world view has also been done away with in favor of a flat map with preset locations. Each location is made up of a 3D scene that can be exited by passing the borders. This can lead to linearity since exploration is no longer a possibility, but the developers have done their best to keep the game as open ended as possible. You are not forced to enter important locations until you are ready and once areas are open you are allowed to visit them at your leisure; at least until you near the game's end. Just like in the previous games, war still plays a major role in determining the fate of the conflicting sides. In the previous games, large scale battles consisted of two faceless armies lead by NPCs rushing and whittling each other down until the opposing side fell. The worst part is that there was very little strategy involved, as most of the outcomes seemed to be determined at random. In Suikoden III, the wars are fought by actual characters; where stats make a difference. Granted, most of the game's war skirmishes are impossible to win by default, but the ones that can be won are fought by the characters you have recruited.

As stated earlier, Thomas the castle master owns the the castle and merely contributes to the war effort by allowing it to be used as a command post. While bringing more people in will make the castle bustle with activity, sadly, it will not help repair it. You won't see any towers rise or walls grow in this sequel, instead you'll have visitors build shops and take over the various rooms. Fortunately, a few new minigames have made the cut as well; such as the theater minigame, where you choose characters to act in various famous plays. Each character's unique reaction and performance never cease to entertain me.

Another big change in the series is the move to fully 3D environments. The graphics are by no means astounding, but they manage to retain that certain charm that is sometimes lost during the transition from the second dimension. You will find no massive polygon counts here as the models are fairly blocky and the textures are simple, but colorful. The character models can be described as "quasi-SD" due to the fact that they are not fully proportional, but they're also nothing like the traditional SD design (games like FFIX and Evolution come to mind). The models come complete with working gestures and faces that depict a range of expressions from anger to drowsiness. Buildings and structures are simple looking, but there are no major issues here. My only complaint is the lack of personality displayed by the characters during battle. Characters no longer have their own unique mannerisms like in the previous games, which makes combat appear awfully generic. Most one-handed sword fighters have the same stance, with the exception of a few like Thomas who swats rather than swings. The combat animations could have used more fluidity; I couldn't help but feel that I was watching a couple of animatronic robots staging a famous Suikoden fight scene. Occasional slowdowns are experienced as well, which is unacceptable given the level of technology used for the game.

One other area believed to be lacking is the music. This is a very subjective criteria, but overall, the BGM doesn't quite have the same effect as the second game's soundtrack did. The music in Suikoden III is considerably more relaxed and rustic sounding, which, at the very least fits the setting well. Unfortunately, you won't hear many familiar tunes in this game, as most of the songs are completely new, which is not such a bad thing. While Suikoden III fails to impress in the BGM department, it delivers a knockout in the form of great battle music. Songs such as Glimmering Sword and The One on the Way totally eclipse its predecessors' battle music offerings. Simply put, this is the best battle music I've ever heard and there's no better way to psyche yourself up before a hostile encounter. You'll also be glad to know that the recording quality of the sound effects have been greatly improved from the previous games.

I was a bit skeptical when I first started the game, but now I am thankful that I have my own opinion. Had I listened to the many negative remarks about the game, I would have missed a classic for sure. I've spent over 70 hours playing Suikoden III and they were some of the most enjoyable experiences a gamer could hope to have. Bring on Suikoden IV.

Highs: Unique gameplay, adorable graphics, stirring battle music, great translation
Lows: Occasional slowdowns, some characters lack style and personality
Bottom Line: A worthy sequel and a refreshing change of pace.
Verdict:
